What Makes Metropolitan Schoolhouse Unique?
Metropolitan Schoolhouse is a unique, independent school within Chicago. We offer whole-person, student-centered learning through an innovative and individualized curriculum. Our educators hail from multi-faceted backgrounds and are truly dedicated to the development of our students.
Whole Person & Student-Centered Learning
We focus on whole person learning, which develops the student both individually and in relationship to the world. Whole person learning celebrates and enhances individual student personalities, experiences, relationships and understanding of the world. Students develop and connect their academic learning to all aspects of life. This powerful learner-centered approach to education connects academics with life skills, social skills, communication skills and technology that are necessary in today’s world.
Innovative and Differentiated Curriculum
Our innovative and individualized curriculum takes differentiated learning to a whole new level. Units and lessons expand upon student strengths while meeting individual goals. Students are allowed choice in modalities of learning that capitalize on individual learning styles. Our curriculum is also highly experience-based with community service projects, field trips and connections to local businesses as common elements.
Inquiry Based Learning with a Global Perspective
Our students learn about our world, but also develop meaningful connections within our world. Inquiry based learning allows students to extend and apply foundation skills and connect their interests to real world situations. Students develop higher order thinking skills as they analyze information, develop propositions, provide solutions and create technology and integrated arts projects that demonstrate their thinking and make their learning visible. Through this approach, student master foundational academic skills and are empowered as active community members.
Staff Development and Continuing Education
Our staff brings diverse teaching experiences from charter, public, special education and international positions into the classroom. This leads to a deeper respect for varied learning styles and varied backgrounds to draw upon. It also fosters a broader and global perspective. Likewise, our teachers model a love of learning for students by furthering their own education. Our teachers are constantly continuing their own professional development.
